An Afghan woman who introduced her as the ‘first female mayor of Afghanistan’ to Western institutions is now being criticized by the public on social media.

Zarifa Ghafaria provincial mayor of ‘Maidan Wardak’, a central province of Afghanistan, had to leave her country after the collapse of the administration of the republic of Afghanistan in August 2021.

Afghanistan’s second female mayor was another Hazara woman, Khadijah Ahmadi, who served as mayor of the city of Nili in Daikundi province from 2018 until the fall of Kabul in 2021.

Ms. Rezai says the petition is to correct historical wrongs, promote journalistic fact-checking, and protest misrepresentation and other denial of women’s rights. She is recognizing the achievements of two Hazara women who paved the way for people like Zarifa Ghafari become one of the mayors.
