Cubesat formation could beam ad to Earth

According to a Russian study, flying a formation of cubesats to display advertisements in the night sky could be economically viable.

The study was conducted by a team of researchers from Moscow's Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology

considered the usage of 344 square foot (32 square metres) solar sails linked to cubesats

Such big reflectors have never been used on cubesats previously, but the study determined that the method was practical.

finding that such advertising campaigns would benefit with a fleet of 50 such satellites

According to an emailed press release accompanying the announcement, the study took into account aspects such as "satellite fuel consumption."

Outside of Russia, the study was met with scepticism, with space journalist Jeff Foust laughing about it.
