At 9:54 a.m. EDT, a rocket launched from Site 31 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (1354 GMT or 6:54 p.m. local time).
After a nine-minute climb into orbit, the Soyuz crew launched toward the International Space Station.
