A US astronaut has taken off for the International Space Station, flying in a seat allocated on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

NASA's Francisco "Frank" Rubio launched alongside Roscosmos' Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin.

On Wednesday, Russia's federal space corporation (Sept. 21). Their Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft blasted off on a Soyuz-2 rocket.

At 9:54 a.m. EDT, a rocket launched from Site 31 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (1354 GMT or 6:54 p.m. local time).

After a nine-minute climb into orbit, the Soyuz crew launched toward the International Space Station.
