Hollywood megastar Leonardo DiCaprio has donated $10m (£7.6m) to a fund for Ukraine, where his grandmother was born in 1915.
The actor was reportedly very close to his grandmother, Helene Indenbirken, and would take her to the premieres of many of her films. DiCaprio would call her ‘Oma’.
The 47-year-old’s donation was announced by the Visegrad International Fund, according to Polish News.
Ukraine has been under Russian invasion for nearly two weeks, resulting in thousands of deaths and widespread destruction of homes, schools and hospitals.
It has also caused the fastest exodus of Europeans since World War II, with more than two million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries.
DiCaprio is famous for his philanthropy, and the situation in Ukraine, as well as his personal connection to the country, apparently prompted the large donation.
