There has been a lot of talk recently about Aamir Khan’s leading man, Laal Singh Chaddha, about the calls to boycott the film, why no one is going to see the film, and why the film has missed the mark, especially from the point of view from the box office
Aamir Khan’s leading man opened at a meager low Rs. 11.50 cr on day 1, and that too on Raksha Bandhan, which represents a public holiday in India. The film saw a big drop on day 2 and consolidated over the weekend, but at very low levels. Independence Day numbers were lower than the first, third, and fourth days, which basically explains the story. The film was priced at a very low Rs. 46.25 cr after 5 days.
Laal Singh Chaddha marked Aamir Khan’s return to the big screen after four long years. The movie was highly anticipated from the moment it was officially announced, months after the release of his last film Thugs Of Hindostan and was in production for over 3 years.
The film’s journey began when Laal Singh Chaddha’s screenwriter Atul Kulkarni approached Aamir with the idea of making the Indian version of Forrest Gump. It took Aamir almost 8 years, just to get the remake rights to the movie. All the effort put into directing the film does not show results to the same extent, as the film has failed to put on a show, anywhere it has been released.
The performance of the film abroad has been fair, although it does not come close to what was expected of it. The gross for 6 Days Abroad is just over $5 million, and as the trend suggests, the film may be lucky to make $9 million in its first run.
Unfortunately, the movie has shown no signs of a potential breakup. Positive reception from Taiwan and Hong Kong next month may help push the film past $10 million, but again it depends on the film’s reception more than anything else.
For now, on Tuesday, while Laal Singh Chaddha stood at Rs. 2 million rupees*, Raksha Bandhan was reduced to Rs. 1.75 million rupees*. This is a major drop compared to the Thursday release of both films, which stood at Rs.11.70 crore and Rs. 8.20 crore respectively.
